The article examines the West Germany miners union’s (Industriegewerkschaft Bergbau und Energie, IGBE) attitude towards Turkish migrant workers in the Ruhr coalfields between the 1960s and the 1980s. By the beginning of the 1970s, the Turkish migrant workers had evolved into an important part of the Ruhr mines’ workforce. The Ruhrkohle AG, the unitary enterprise (Einheitsunternehmen) of the Ruhr mining industry, was for a short period the largest employer of Turkish migrant workers in the Federal Republic.
